چکیده

This paper proposes a high-speed architecture to realize two-variable numeric functions. It represents the given function as an edgevalued multiple-valued decision diagram (EVMDD), and shows a systematic design method based on the EVMDD. To achieve a design, we characterize a numeric function f by the values of l and p for which f is an l-restricted Mp-monotone increasing function. Here, l is a measure of subfunctions of f and p is a measure of the rate at which f increases with an increase in the dependent variable. For the special case of an EVMDD, the EVBDD, we show an upper bound on the number of nodes needed to realize an l-restricted Mp-monotone increasing function. Experimental results show that all of the two-variable numeric functions considered in this paper can be converted into an l-restricted Mp-monotone increasing function with p = 1 or 3. Thus, they can be compactly realized by EVBDDs. Since EVMDDs have shorter paths and smaller memory size than EVBDDs, EVMDDs can produce fast and compact NFGs. key words: two-variable numeric function generators (NFGs), edgevalued multiple-valued decision diagrams (EVMDDs), edge-valued binary decision diagrams (EVBDDs), graph-based representation of numeric functions, programmable memory-based architecture

Numeric Function Generators Using Decision Diagrams for Discrete Functions

This paper introduces design methods for numeric function generators (NFGs) using decision diagrams. NFGs are hardware accelerators to compute values of numeric functions such as trigonometric, logarithmic, square root, and reciprocal functions. Most existing design methods for NFGs are intended only for a specific class of numeric functions. However, by using decision diagrams for discrete fun...

Edge-Shifted Decision Diagrams for Multiple-Valued Logic

Symbolic data structures for multi-valued logics are useful in a number of applications, from model-checking to circuit design and switch-level circuit verification. Such data structures are referred to as decision diagrams, and are typically considered effective if they are small, i.e., common co-factors of a function are shared, and canonical, i.e., given a variable ordering, there is a uniqu...

Programmable Architectures and Design Methods for Two-Variable Numeric Function Generators

This paper proposes programmable architectures and design methods for numeric function generators (NFGs) of two-variable functions. To realize a twovariable function in hardware, we partition a given domain of the function into segments, and approximate the function by a polynomial in each segment. This paper introduces two planar segmentation algorithms that efficiently partition a domain of a...

Piecewise Arithmetic Expressions of Numeric Functions and Their Application to Design of Numeric Function Generators

In this paper, we propose a new representation of numeric functions using a piecewise arithmetic expression. To represent a numeric function compactly, we partition the domain of the function into uniform segments, and transform the sub-function in each segment into an arithmetic spectrum. From this arithmetic spectrum, we derive an arithmetic expression, and obtain a piecewise arithmetic expre...

Heuristics to Minimize Multiple-Valued Decision Diagrams

In this paper, we propose a method to minimize multiple-valued decision diagrams (MDDs) for multipleoutput functions. We consider the following: (1) a heuristic for encoding the 2-valued inputs; and (2) a heuristic for ordering the multiple-valued input variables based on sampling, where each sample is a group of outputs. We first generate a 4-valued input 2-valued multiple-output function from...
